How a Retractable Sliding Screen Door Works

A sliding glass door is the opening most people leave open on a warm evening, and the one the stock screen handles worst. A retractable sliding screen door replaces that clunky panel with a roll of mesh stored in a slim housing on one side of the frame.

To close it, pull the handle bar across the opening. It glides on a ball-bearing mechanism along a low-profile track and meets the other side of the frame. To open it, release the bar. A speed reducer lets the mesh roll back into the housing at a controlled pace.

Because the screen lives in the housing when it is not in use, your view to the patio stays clear. There is no extra panel parked across half the glass.

What to Consider for Your Patio Door

  • Your existing slider track. The screen track has to sit next to your door's track without getting in its way. We plan the low-profile track so both the glass door and the screen run smoothly.

  • Which side opens. Where the housing mounts depends on how your slider opens and how you use the doorway. We work this out with you at measurement.

  • Opening size. Standard sliders take a single screen. For large openings, multi-panel systems cover up to 192" wide.

  • Pets and kids. Sliders to the backyard see constant traffic. Pet-resistant mesh is more durable than standard mesh and better suited to homes with dogs and cats.

  • Wind and fog. Patio doors often face open yards and decks. Retract the screen on gusty days, and keep the bottom track clear of leaves and grit so the screen keeps gliding.

Sliding Screen Door Options Compared

Most sliding doors already came with a screen. Here is how a retractable patio door screen compares with that and the other common option.

Standard sliding mesh screen

Where it works

Usually comes with the door, costs little, and replacement panels are easy to find.

Where it falls short

It always covers half the doorway. Over time the rollers wear, the frame bends, and the panel jumps its track. Many end up in the garage.

Magnetic mosquito curtain

Where it works

No installation and very cheap. Handy for a short-term fix.

Where it falls short

Hangs in front of the glass full-time, and the magnetic seam can blow open on a breezy patio. Adhesive mounting rarely holds well on a slider frame.

Retractable sliding screen door

Where it works

Custom-fit, pulls across with one hand on a ball-bearing glide, and retracts out of view with a speed reducer for gentle return.

Where it falls short

Costs more than a stock screen and needs professional measuring and installation. Very wide openings call for a multi-panel system.
