How a Retractable Screen Door Works

A retractable screen door is a roll of mesh stored in a slim housing mounted to one side of your door frame. When you want the screen, you pull the handle bar across the opening. It rides in a guide track at the top and a low track at the bottom, then catches on the opposite side of the frame with a magnetic closure.

When you are done, release the handle and the mesh rolls back into the housing. A speed reducer slows that return so the bar glides home instead of snapping against the frame. With the screen retracted, your door looks the way it did before we installed it.

That is the main reason people choose a retractable screen door over a fixed one. You get airflow and insect protection when you want it, and an open, uncluttered doorway the rest of the time.

What We Check Before Recommending One

  • Door swing. In-swing and out-swing doors both work. The screen has to sit where the door can still open and close freely, so the swing direction decides which side of the frame the housing and tracks go on.

  • Trim and frame depth. The housing and tracks need a flat, solid surface to mount to. Older homes with deep or decorative trim sometimes need a different mounting approach, and we sort that out at the measurement visit.

  • Threshold. The bottom track runs across your threshold. We look at its height and shape so the track sits as low and flat as the opening allows.

  • Pets. A dog that pushes through a closed screen will stretch standard mesh over time. If you have pets, ask about our pet-resistant mesh, which resists scratches and tears better.

  • Sun, fog, and wind. Doors that face afternoon sun or salty coastal air wear mesh faster. A retracted screen is protected inside its housing, which helps. On very windy days, retract the screen. It is a mesh panel, not a storm door.

Our single door screens fit openings up to 48" wide and 96" tall. If your opening is wider, or you have a pair of doors, see our French door screens. For a glass slider, our patio door screens are built for that opening, and we also make retractable window screens to match.

Retractable Screen Door vs. Other Options

Most homeowners we meet have already tried one of the cheaper options. Here is a fair look at how a retractable screen door compares.

Magnetic mosquito net curtain

Where it works

Cheap, quick to hang, and needs no tools. Fine for a rental or a short-term fix.

Where it falls short

The fabric hangs in the doorway all the time. The magnets along the center seam can pull apart in a breeze, and adhesive or tack strips tend to loosen on painted trim.

Fixed or hinged screen door

Where it works

Sturdy and simple. It can stay closed all summer with no thought.

Where it falls short

It never goes away. You open a second door on every trip, it changes the look of your entry, and the screen sits in the sun year-round.

Retractable screen door

Where it works

Custom-fit to your opening, closes with a magnetic catch, and rolls out of sight when you don't need it. Frame and housing carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Where it falls short

Costs more than a curtain and needs professional measuring and installation. Standard mesh is lighter than a framed screen, so homes with large dogs should consider the pet-resistant option.
