Retractable Screen Doors & Window Screens in the East Bay

From Craftsman bungalows in Berkeley to ranch homes in Pleasanton, East Bay houses have a lot of doors that people want to leave open. We install custom retractable screens in Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, Fremont and the towns in between, so you get the airflow without the flies, moths and mosquitoes.

Why East Bay Homes Need Different Things

The East Bay is really several climates and several eras of housing. A screen that's right for a Rockridge bungalow may not be the best choice for a Danville patio, so we look at how you use each opening before we recommend anything.

Mild by the bay, hot over the hills

Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and San Leandro sit close to the bay and stay fairly mild, with cool mornings for much of the summer. Cross the hills into Walnut Creek, Concord, Lafayette or the Tri-Valley and summer afternoons get much hotter.

Inland, a lot of people keep the house closed during the heat and open up after sunset. A screened door lets that cooler evening air in without inviting in every insect drawn to the porch light.

Hillside homes with decks

In the Oakland and Berkeley hills, Orinda and Moraga, many homes step down a slope with a deck off the kitchen or living room. Those deck doors get used constantly. A retractable screen rolls away completely when you're carrying food out or hosting guests, then pulls across when you want the door open for air.

Craftsman bungalows

Berkeley, Rockridge, Temescal and Alameda have plenty of early 1900s Craftsman homes with wood doors and wide trim. A bulky aluminum screen door can look out of place on them. A retractable screen mounts inside the opening and comes in white, tan, bronze, brown or black to blend with the trim.

Mid-century ranches and patio sliders

Much of Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Fremont and Pleasanton was built out in the decades after World War II, with single-story ranch homes and wide sliding doors to the backyard. Original slider screens are often bent or missing, and a retractable sliding screen is a clean replacement.

East Bay Screen Questions

It gets hot in Walnut Creek. Can I leave the door open in the evening with a screen?

Yes. That's one of the most common reasons inland customers call us. With the screen pulled across, you can open the door after sunset to let cooler air in while keeping insects out. Keep in mind that a retractable screen is not a security door and doesn't lock.

Our deck door gets heavy use. Will a retractable screen hold up?

Retractable screens are a good fit for busy doors because they roll fully out of the way when you don't need them, so they aren't being bumped or pushed through all day. If you have pets, we can use a tougher pet-resistant mesh.

Can you screen a wide opening onto a deck or patio?

Usually. Our double door system covers openings up to 96 inches wide, and our sliding door screens fit standard and oversized sliders. We'll confirm the right option when we measure.

Will a screen look right on an older Craftsman?

A retractable screen mounts inside the door opening and disappears into a slim housing when it's not in use, so it doesn't cover up the door the way a traditional screen door does. We'll match the frame color to your trim.
